How to Choose the Best Road Motorbike for Your Needs

26 Mar 2025

Road motorbikes are compact machines with a short wheelbase and a light weight of 100–200kg. They easily maneuver through traffic and slip between cars in congested streets. These bikes are highly responsive to steering input, making them perfect for urban environments. A huge advantage of this class is that they have a very comfortable seating position compared to other categories. They are also rather versatile and many of them are built to handle light off-road trips every now and then.

It is so easy to get lost in this endless sea of bike models and types. Let’s discuss what to look for and how to choose a road motorbike that will suit your particular needs.

Choosing by engine displacement

When choosing a road motorbike, consider models with an engine displacement between 250cc and 650cc but not higher. Otherwise, it might be too powerful to handle in urban settings.

250cc:
Motorcycles with a 250cc engine are lightweight and easy to handle, which is why they should be the top choice for beginners. They are predictable and user-friendly while still being reliable and durable. The Sharmax RST 250 is a great specimen in this category. It is known for its classic design with vibrant accents for high visibility on the road. The model is highly recommended by many riders, especially for those just starting out.

400cc:
These bikes offer more power (up to 55 HP) but aren’t much heavier than a 250cc. Besides, they are still rather affordable. Their simplicity and ease of handling make them an excellent choice for riders who want to upgrade without jumping straight into high-performance bikes.

600-650cc:
Motorcycles in this range are more serious machines and they are better suited for experienced riders than newcomers. With a lot more power, the 600cc configuration requires better riding skills, especially when it comes to turning and avoiding obstacles.

Choosing by motorbike type

As mentioned above, road motorbikes can be viewed as a broad category consisting of several distinct types. Other sources may provide a more detailed classification, but we believe this grouping gives a clear overview of the main types available, helping you understand your options. Let's outline some of them and discuss what sets them apart.

Classic

Classic motorcycles resemble the iconic British bikes of the 1950s. They feature a teardrop-shaped fuel tank, round headlights, spoked wheels, and chrome accents. These bikes often have a wide and comfortable seat which can also fit a passenger. Unlike sportbikes, classic models typically don’t have any aerodynamic fairings, and this design gives them a clean, stylish look with minimalist features.

A great example of this category is the Sharmax Road Bike RR 551 Ultra. It blends timeless retro design with modern performance and such specifications as hydraulic disc brakes with ABS and IFE Bosh system.

Naked Bikes

Naked bikes evolved from sportbikes when riders removed damaged fairings and continued riding without them. You will recognize them by their exposed frames, sharp lines, and minimalist design. These vehicles come in various engine sizes, from beginner-friendly 125–300cc options to powerful 800cc+ machines.

They usually feature modern technology such as fuel injection, liquid cooling, ABS, LED lighting, and digital instrument panels. A great option in this category is the Sharmax Naked Bike RST 422 Ultra. Its sleek look and dynamic performance are ideal for city riders who prefer an aggressive style accompanied by comfort and advanced safety features.

Sportbikes

Sportbikes have their roots in MotoGP racing, which began in 1949. Initially, these machines were designed for speed tracks only. They feature an aerodynamic exterior with lightweight frames, low handlebars, and high foot pegs that put the rider in a forward-leaning position. Their rigid suspension and low ground clearance provide excellent stability at high speeds, making them ideal for sharp cornering.

Sportbike engines are built for high revs and rapid acceleration. However, overly powerful models may not be suitable for beginners in the city, as they require precise handling. A well-balanced option is the Sharmax Super Sport GP 401 Ultra, which delivers impressive speed and control without being overwhelming for riders who are still developing their skills.

Sport-Touring

Sport-touring bikes offer a blend of sporty performance and long-distance comfort. They feature aerodynamic fairings similar to sportbikes but with a more upright seating position, improved wind protection, and a wider seat. They are good for extended travel which is why they are often equipped with luggage compartments, high handlebars, and a smooth suspension to enhance rider comfort.

A good example is the Sharmax Touring Bike GL 570, which comes with a liquid-cooled engine and is a great option for both new and experienced users. This model represents a reliable street bike with touring capabilities.

Cruisers

Cruisers take inspiration from American motorcycles of the 1930s and 1940s. Originally built for racing, they evolved into comfortable long-distance machines. Cruisers are known for their relaxed riding position, where the rider sits with extended legs, a large rake on the front fork, and a teardrop-shaped fuel tank.

They also feature low-revving engines that ensure smooth acceleration without sudden bursts of power. Their abundant chrome details and round headlights add to their timeless aesthetic. A perfect example of this style is the Sharmax Travel 1000 RR Limited, a premium touring cruiser designed for effortless highway rides with a bold, eye-catching design.

Enduro Travel

Enduro travel motorcycles are built for long-distance rides on any terrain, be it paved roads, dirt tracks, or no roads at all. Essentially, they are simplified versions of rally-raid bikes: lightweight, powerful, and with high off-road capabilities.

The category originated in the 1980s when manufacturers began producing bikes specifically for long-distance cross-country racing. This motorcycle class is highly versatile. An average enduro can reach speeds of up to 150 km/h on highways which is close to some high-performance sports models. Unlike sport-touring bikes, enduro travel bikes have high ground clearance and long-travel suspension, allowing them to tackle bumps and obstacles at speed.

Most models are equipped with crash bars and off-road features as part of the standard package. A prime example in this category is the Sharmax Enduro Travel 300, a rugged and reliable bike designed for riders who want to venture beyond the beaten path.

Final Thoughts

When choosing between different models, think of what your everyday route will be: will it include some stretches with unpaved tracks or will it be city streets only? Do you want to get some extra speed or is a relaxed cruising experience more your style?  All these factors will help you decide on your best road motorbike.
